Antarctica to Zimbabwe – Day 13 – San Jose de Maipo

Posted on February 18, 2025February 21, 2025

Antarctica to Zimbabwe – Day 12 – San Jose de Maipo can be found here.

Can you have sea days on land? If so, that’s what we’re shooting for – some time to take it easy and catch up with all the various ‘admin’ that builds up during a trip of this length.

No alarms set this morning, and we naturally woke sometime after 8 am. The kids were moving slowly, so I went off to the restaurant on my own to have a coffee and do a bit of writing.

9 am came and went – plenty of writing got done, but very little eating. It was almost 10 am before my wife and kids finally reached the restaurant. Clearly they needed a lazy day!

Breakfast today was very similar to the day before, except that they had replaced the lemon loaf with some tasty croissant.

On the way back to the dome, I noticed that they were watering the football pitch again:

Not sure that’s entirely appropriate for somewhere that bills themselves as an “eco” resort – though there seems to be no shortage of water here.

We then found a comfy spot outside the restaurant, and sat down to write and do homework. It’s a long weekend back in Canada, so the kids have almost managed to catch up. One more afternoon should do it.

We wrapped this up at close to 1 pm, at which point it was time for lunch. I first ran up another load of laundry – though I’ve now been told that I could leave it at the cafeteria, instead of walking it up the hot and dusty road!

But it did give me a chance to get some more photos of the resort:

Plus I discovered the entrance to a local botanical garden:

So we’ll have to check that out later in our stay.

I also managed a few more photos of our loft suite dome:

We then took the kids off to the cafeteria for the sake of variety:

It was a good choice – the kids really enjoyed their burgers:

They then went to the pool:

While the adults went off for lunch on their own. My wife had a salad, and I had the shrimp panzotti again. No photos as we’ve had this before.

The kids then returned from the pool. Unfortunately, our daughter had gotten a glancing sting from a wasp or hornet of some kind – through her hair, so it didn’t cause too much harm. They’d nevertheless lasted for more than 45 minutes.

My wife then took them out for ice cream so I could get a bit more work done, and they had a wander through the native species garden:

Then back to the room for a bit more homework / writing / reading / downtime before heading off for dinner.

The kids started with strawberry juice:

And I had the baked ribs with sauteed potatoes:

Otherwise, everyone else ordered duplicates of one kind or another.

The ribs were good but generally everything this evening was overcooked to some extent or another. Ah, well – a small distraction from some otherwise lovely meals.

The only other issue we’ve noted is that there are discrepancies between the print menus and the online menus that you can scan via QR code at your table. (Though you must not be on the restaurant wifi to access the digital menu for reasons I still don’t understand.)

Thus our land-based sea day drew to an end:
